The P. Krishnaswamy Memorial Award for Journalism, instituted in memory of veteran journalist P. Krishnaswamy, was presented to senior journalist T. N. Gopalan for his lifetime contribution to the field of journalism at a function held here on Saturday by N. Markandan, former Vice-Chancellor, Gandhigram Rural Institute.
In his address, Dr. Markandan said that good newspapers created good citizens for the country and also protected the society. The role of newspapers had become more profound now when cultural degradation was taking place in critical areas. He appealed to journalists to create awareness of social issues among people, essentially the educated class.
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Gopalan recalled how the late Krishnaswamy, who had functioned in various key positions in newspapers in Sri Lanka before migrating to India, wore humility all over him.
Those who offered felicitations to Mr. Gopalan included Dhyanchand Carr, former Principal, Tamil Nadu Theological Seminary, and A. Mahaboob Batcha, Managing Trustee, Society for Community Organisation Trust.
